The University
Founded in 1527 as the first Protestant university, the Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany, belongs to the oldest and most reputed universities in the whole of Europe. In Germany it was ranked first overall in one of the latest university rankings (Focus, 1997), which confirms the good quality of teaching as well as the excellent and highly recognized research activities. This is also underlined by the seven Leibniz prize winners, honoured for particularly excellent academic performance.
The Philipps-University of Marburg has 19 departments that employ 2000 academic´s staff. At present there are over 17,000 students registered at the university. The largest departments are Economics, Law, and Medicine each with 2000 and more students. One characteristic of the University is the wide range of subjects offered with numerous combination possibilities.
Located about 50 miles north of Frankfurt, the leading financial centre of Germany, the University in general and the Department of Banking and International Finance in particular have always enjoyed a particularly high standing within the academic and financial community due to its leading research activities.
